Adam Lippes for Target Review

Today I paid a visit to two Target stores to check out (see what I did there?) the Adam Lippes for Target collection and review the buffalo plaid collection in person. Given the enthusiasm for the Lilly for Target collection and subsequent disappointment of countless shoppers who weren't able to buy their wish list items, I can't blame those who are feeling collaboration fatigue. I get it; they feel let down by Target. Furthermore, I'm not surprised by the lack of excitement over this line and the lack of energy that Target put into marketing it. There was no New York Fashion Week party, no print ads in major fashion magazines, and very little social media buzz compared to previous designer collaborations. Are people not going mad for plaid? Are we back to square one? (Pun intended, and clearly, I need to get some sleep!)

Back to the quiet launch of the collection, which is part of a plaid takeover that Target is featuring across many product categories for fall. The Adam Lippes for Target line includes over 50 items for women, men, pets, and the home. I arrived at my store just before 8AM and right as I walked toward the unusually empty entrance, the doors magically opened, as if to welcome me (and only me) inside with open arms. I almost hesitated as I walked into the store because there was nobody else in sight. I didn't expect a line, but this store was desolate. #NotComplaining

I was greeted by the pillows, fig scented candles, throw blankets, plates, and a limited selection of men's and women's clothing.

The throw blankets ($35) felt soft and are reversible (insert thumbs up emoji here), and the serving trays ($25) were heavier than I expected. I liked the ceramic dog bowl and pet treat canister in person, as they appeared to be well made and would look cute in the kitchen. Plus, how fun is the dog shaped handle?

Adam Lippes for Target Pet Bowl Canister

My store seemed to have one of each size in many items, such as the cowl neck sweater (which also comes in plus sizes 1X-3X online). I did not see any plus sizes in the two stores I visited. Come on Target, you can do better!

The painterly plaid crepe blouses (shown below in blue and black) remind me of the Merona brand because of the fabric and print. Both were lightweight polyester, and the kind that's unfortunately prone to static cling.

The shearling drawstring bucket bag ($34.99) has feet, which is a nice feature to keep the bottom clean. It's small but not too small like some of the Eddie Borgo bags. The inside has a zip pocket and large patch pocket. It's a top pick for me, as I love the neutral color, gold hardware, and cozy texture. Just don't wear with a new pair of dark denim, or it'll discolor the bag. Regarding the other bags: the plaid bucket bag is also cute in this black and white colorway, and it's slightly larger. I was also eyeing the weekender ($49.99) in black and grey, as it looks like the perfect size for road trips.

Adam Lippes for Target Shearling BucketBag

The oatmeal plaid backpack ($39.99) looked much cuter in person than online. I like the side pockets, although the zip didn't feel hefty enough to withstand the test of repeated use.

Adam Lippes for Target Shearling Backpack

The plaid pointed toe pumps ($39.99) remind me of the Prabal Gurung "Nolita" print pumps, and they run true to size. They were much more comfortable than I expected, and even come with a dust bag, which is a nice touch and a nod to luxury brands.

Adam Lippes for Target Plaid Pumps

The graphic print of the pumps print feels artsy and elevates a basic outfit with dark denim. For me, they were more comfy than the flats, which run half a size big.

The ballet flats ($29.99) also come with a dust bag. I tried on a size 7 (my regular size) and they slipped off the back of the heel when I walked. A 6.5 would've fit much better for me. Unfortunately, they felt stiff, but a fellow shopper complimented them on me nonetheless.

Fitting Room Photos

For reference, I'm a petite size XS or 0 at Target and currently around 100 lbs. I found almost everything to run big and to be in line with Target's Women's sizing, like the Merona brand. Quality seemed better than previous designer collections, with no visible issues regarding puckered seams, tricky zippers, etc. Here's what I tried on in size XS.

The painterly crepe shell tank ($27.99) had an asymmetrical hem that was longer in the back. It also had side vents and a deep V-neck. It's a sporty and lightweight slip-on style. I'm wearing it untucked on the left and tucked into the Adam Lippes for Target woven joggers ($29.99) on the right. The joggers felt comfy and had cute plaid trim and a plaid print drawstring, but they didn't feel special enough to buy.

The painterly plaid shirt dress ($49.99) was really long on me as I expected it to be. I prefer it belted (here's a stretchy belt under $20 similar to mine) to define the waist. It's a versatile piece that can be worn as a dress, a long shirt, or layered under a vest, etc. The maxi length is on-trend, but more suitable for taller customers. This piece is really similar to one from the Fall 2014 Adam Lippes collection. See for yourself!

I wanted to like the somewhat thin mohair coat ($69.99), but it was too big and too long on me. It was ever so slightly itchy due to the 10% wool/90% polyester fiber content and the fact that it's unlined. It has two side pockets and snap front closures. It also left my black top with layer of lint. I wanted to try on the heavy weight coat ($129.99), but my store didn't carry it.

Adam Lippes for Target Mohair Coat

The belted layering vest ($39.99) was a surprise hit for me. The faux shearling pockets are a signature Adam Lippes detail, and the neutral black/white/grey color palette makes it easy to wear. I like this over a turtleneck when it gets colder, and over a simple white tee for when it's not so cold. Major thumbs up to Adam Lippes on this one. It's my hero piece in the collection and it feels like a cozy wrap made of great quality. It's warm and well worth the price in my opinion.

Adam Lippes for Target Belted Vest

What I liked most about the cowl neck sweater were the side slits and the fringe. Like the mohair coat, the XS didn't flatter me and was oversized. I'd probably love it more with a braided brown belt (like this style under $20).

Adam Lippes for Target Cowl Neck Sweater

The mohair fringe poncho ($59.99) features Target's signature colors, and I didn't care for this color palette nor the oversized fit. I tried on a size S/M. I liked the tassel detail, but the fit wasn't for me. It felt heftier and more substantial than I was expecting. It would be a more suitable option if I were taller, liked the print, and if it weren't over 80 degrees today (and every other day in southern California so far this month).

AdamL ippes for Target Fringe Poncho

The double layer shift dress  ($49.99) was my least favorite fitting room piece. I belted it on the right to give it more shape, but I still didn't like the fit. There are side vents on the black layer, while the grid print layer underneath runs narrow in fit through the waist. I'm not a fan of this one for myself, but would probably like it better on someone much taller. It's a medium weight polyester crepe.

Adam Lippes for Target Layer Shift Dress

The painterly crepe blouse in blue ($29.99) was lightweight and comfortable, with a longer hem in back. It feels breezy and artsy, and has an inverted pleat in back for an oversized feel. There is a partial button placket, but I was able to just slip this on over my head easily. I like it more than I was expecting.

The Men's Collection

With some effort (ahem, bribery), I cajoled the man friend into trying on a few pieces. For reference, he's about 5'10" and 150 lbs. with a narrow build.

He's wearing a size medium in the waffle knit henley ($19.99), which runs true to Target sizing. In the middle, he's wearing a size small in the shawl collar cardigan ($39.99), which runs long, is 100% cotton, and is heavy in weight. The half-zip sherpa jacket ($39.99) on the right had sleeves that run long, and he's wearing a medium. I like the contrasting zip pocket and logo label on the back of the neck. He was comfortable in all three pieces, and received a compliment from another Adam Lippes for Target shopper while trying on the sherpa jacket, which also comes in black.

The shawl collar cardigan is a great gift idea in case you start your holiday shopping early this year! I also love this crewneck sweater ($34.99) and baseball bomber jacket ($64.99), which my store didn't stock.

Fall 2015 LC Lauren Conrad Runway Collection Review

On Wednesday night, reality show alumnus Lauren Conrad kicked off New York Fashion Week with her new ladylike fall 2015 collection (dubbed LC Runway) which was live streamed on LCRunway.com. Staying true to her brand's identity as the go-to for girlie pieces in pastels, the collection featured models with milkmaid braids, a subdued color palette, delicate jewelry, ladylike (leather!) handbags, diaphanous materials, and dramatic dresses. The icing on the pastel cake? Right after the show, fans could shop the LC Runway looks for 25% off. Kudos to Kohl's for putting on a fun show and making the collection available right away!

Fall 2016

The floral wide-leg pants are medium weight polyester, high-waisted, and run slightly small, while the ruffle halter top is true to size.

LC Runway Fall 2016 collection review

Below I'm wearing the floral pants. I sized up from my usual 2 to a 4 in case I wear them with blouses tucked in this winter.

Intrigued after live streaming the 2015 show, I instantly made my wish list. I then paid a visit to my local Kohl's store on Thursday morning, where the associates were just placing all the pretty merchandise on the racks. My timing was spot on. Here's a look at my store's selection.

LC Lauren Conrad Runway Collection

Floral prints, blush tones, maxi lengths, and lace details give the collection a soft, airy vibe.

LC Lauren Conrad Runway Collection

I spy lots of lace and I'm not mad about it! So many of these pieces would be perfect for a fall wedding, bridal photoshoot, or fancy party. I can imagine them being worn for a fantasy forest photoshoot with soft lighting, woodland animals, and gauze tents. OK, so I'm getting carried away here...let's just say I'm inspired. My birthday is in the fall, and I'm going to indulge myself in this collection!

LC Lauren Conrad Runway Collection

Fitting room photos:

For reference, I'm typically a size XS or 2 in the LC Lauren Conrad line, and petite with a current weight of about 101 lbs.

The floral maxi dress below was a favorite, and I'm wearing a 4. It has a full slip and back button at the neck which can be tricky to put on and fasten without help. The dress is too big in the waist and in the length, but I still loved the light feel and the pretty print. It reminds me of Erdem, one of my favorite designers and a master of dramatic florals. Note the scalloped edges on the floppy bow tie at the neck. Cute details, right? Ideal for twirling in the wind or on the dance floor.

LC Runway Floral Maxi Dress

The lace trim blouse below was worn very well by Chrissy Teigen at the LC Runway show, and so it was an instant favorite. It's sheer (so a camisole might be required) with tricky buttons at the back neckline. I'm wearing a size small since I couldn't find my regular XS and it's true to LC sizing. It also comes in solid navy and pale violet colorways. I paired it with the embroidered velvet shorts, which are a size 4. The shorts run very small and are well tailored, with a few loose threads that I had to fix. These two pieces are favorites; I adore the juxtaposition of velvet with chiffon.

LC Runway Lace Trim Blouse Velvet Shorts

A closer look at the  playful embroidered shorts which run from 2-16. The waistband is trimmed in ribbon and does not have stretch. I advise sizing up on these if you're curvy.

LC Runway Embroidered Velvet Shorts

Below is the scallop lace crop top with the floral scuba skirt. The crop top was worn by Lauren Conrad with these high waist wide-leg trousers for her show. (More on that below.) On the right is the faux suede moto jacket in a size 4. It's true to size, medium weight, well made, has pretty rose gold hardware, and is very comfortable. The floral scuba skirts are thick, structured, and slightly scratchy due to the poly/spandex construction. I'm wearing size 2 in both, and they are well tailored with a back zip closure. I'd size up on these If you're in doubt, as they run small in the waist.

LC Runway Floral Scuba Skirts Moto Jacket

I love the moto jacket and floral skirt together for a masculine/feminine mix.

LC Runway Moto Jacket and Floral Scuba Skirt

The moto jacket also comes in a forest green, which my store did not carry.

Sept. 6, 2016 update - It's now sold out, but here's the 2016 version in camel, black, or wine.

LC Runway Faux Suede Moto Jacket

Note the godet insets and soft floral print of this floral scuba skirt, which comes in three different colorways: whisper pink, green gables, or dress blues.

LC Runway Floral Scuba Skirt review

Below, I'm wearing the scallop lace crop top dressed up with the scuba skirt and dressed down with my own Zara cigarette jeans. The bell sleeves make this top on-trend and very romantic. It's a little bit Victorian and a little bit '70s, and I love that. It's comfortable cotton/nylon, easy to put on, and runs slightly big. I'm wearing size small. Beware the sheer lace fabric if you're modest, as this one might require a camisole or bandeau.

LC Runway Scalloped Lace Crop Top Review

Here's a detail shot of the scallop lace crop top, which also comes in pale grey and hushed violet.

LC Runway Scallop Lace Crop Top

Below, I'm wearing the open-back lace romper in a size 4, which was too big in the bodice and shoulders. I love the fact that it's lined, has bell sleeves, an open back style, and pockets, but the button at the back of the neck was tricky. I'd probably love it a lot more in a smaller size. The lace babydoll mini dress on the right was a favorite of mine on the runway, and I'm wearing a size 4 since they didn't have a 2. (Sizing is 0-16 on this dress.) There's a back zip and several buttons in the middle of the back which were impossible for me to fasten. On the plus side, it's lined, comfortable, and once it's on, it feels both flirty and grown-up. See the sexy back button details for yourself. Although the sleeves were too long and I'd need someone to help me put this on, I still adore it.

LC Runway Lace Romper Dress

I layered the sheer lace maxi duster over the jacquard crop top below. The duster's length is too long for me, but I liked the lace panels, button details at the waist, and the layering possibilities. I'm wearing size 4 in both pieces, and the fit was too big on the crop top, and just right on the duster except for length.

LC Runway Lace Maxi Duster Cardigan

Below, I styled the jacquard crop top with the high waist wide-leg trousers. The pants are a size 4 and too big/too long. They are lined, so they are not sheer, which is often an issue with white trousers. The crop top is true to size and has a full center back zip and snaps, making it nearly impossible to put on unless you have bionic arms and superhuman flexibility. It has a flirty bow detail at the waist. Once I managed to get the top on, I did love the way it looked with the jacquard midi skirt, which was actually more of a maxi skirt on me. The skirt is a size 4, has pockets, and has a slight sheen to the fabric. The waist is well tailored/runs small, so if in doubt size up on this one. I adored the way the skirt felt (ladylike, glamorous, and dramatic) so it's a collection must-have for me.

LC Runway Floral Jacquard

Here's a look at the back of the floral jacquard crop top (which is selling out quickly). The floral fabric slightly reminds me of curtains, but the color palette and dusty florals are right in line with my personal style.

LC Runway Floral Jacquard Top

Full disclosure: I would've loved to take home almost all of the collection, but sensible spending habits and limited closet space prevented that. The collection's pale hues, lace looks, and dressy details appealed to my feminine side.

I'm looking forward to dressing some of these pieces up and down for fall. Fortunately, it's currently 25% off, but it's going fast.

Top Fall 2015 Fashion Trends for Juniors

I'm still sifting through photos from last month's trade shows, and in this post I want to shine the spotlight on some of the fall 2015 fashion trends that caught my eye. While walking the shows, it's easy to become overwhelmed by all of the visuals, especially given the enormity of the trade shows, the loud music, and the smart phone-distracted hordes of buyers. There are so many vendors and tons of things to see, so information overload is inevitable. My strategy is to go early in the morning before the caffeinated crowds trickle in and photograph anything that appears notable, interesting, creative, or trend worthy. Then I review all the photos later, once I can process all the visuals in a more focused environment.

A few fall 2015 trends for Juniors kept appearing over and over again, especially the printed A-line dress, faux suede textures, and oversized outerwear. Let's take a look at my top picks.

This swan print swing coat at the LoveDove and Young Byrds booth was too cute to pass. The 1960s shape and Peter Pan collar combined with a pretty shade of pink make it memorable. (Plus, it's giving me major Modcloth vibes.)

I always gravitate towards the bags by Moda Luxe, and these floral print backpacks are no exception. They look so much more expensive than they are, plus the dark floral print works for all seasons.

L.A.-based Juniors brand Cecico is a favorite of mine because their eye-catching booth never ceases to offer endless outfit and trend inspiration. Check out their creative use of floral details and the birdcage props. Cute, right? Chunky knits, layered looks, and boho vibes prevail.

Fall 2015 Boho 1970s Fashion Trend

The '70s are back in full force for fall, and the layered looks above prove that more is more. Rich textures, bold prints, floppy hats, and lots of jewelry are the name of the game.

See more '70s:

Great lengths prevailed in the looks pictured above, namely the midi skirt, maxi coat, and over-the-knee socks. It's all about a play on proportions and an unexpected flash of skin.

Faux suede is one of the strongest stories of the season, with the mod faux suede shift dress and the button-front '70s-inspired skirt taking center stage. Note the layering and heavy use of retro colors including camel, olive, and ivory.

As I walked from booth to booth, the one dress silhouette that kept popping up was the boho shift dress. With its slight A-line shape and bold print, it channels a free-spirited vintage vibe and is easy to style with colorful tights, faux fur vests, fringe sweaters, and fall boots.
