A Change of Scenery

Although Palm Springs is a quick getaway from the L.A. area, upon arrival, it feels like another world. Rows of windmills, rocky mountain terrain, skyscraping palm trees, deceptively simple Mid-Century modern architecture, and ladies in leisure suits dominate the desert landscape. Although there's a lot to see and do, I sometimes think I could be content to stare at the palm trees and the mountains for an unreasonable amount of time.

In reality, I kept busy seeing new things and I developed an unexpected obsession with columnar San Pedro cactus, Mid-Century houses, and the photography of Julius Shulman.

Below are some memorable views, enjoyable moments, and a touch of my personal style from my recent stay in the area.

Highlights include admiring the animals at The Living Desert, touring the immaculately landscaped gardens at Sunnylands, an architecture tour featuring prominent buildings built during the Mid-Century modern era, feeling diminutive next to the the Cabazon Dinosaurs, and an exhilarating morning hike to a waterfall in Tahquitz Canyon.

With an abundance of secondhand stores, tours, hiking trails, outdoor dining, museums, and resorts, I'm already planning what to do on my next visit.
