Despite having a busy weekend, I managed to check out the Albertus Swanepoel for Target hat collection on Sunday. Having picked out three of my favorites upon viewing the lookbook a while back, I knew which ones I'd try on: the Layla, the Bardot, the Zsa Zsa, and the Tabatha. As I browsed, a congenial fifty-something woman also admired the toppers, and we stuck up a conversation about which ones we liked as we tried them on and chatted about how we'd wear them. My top pick, and the one that worked the best on me, was the faux fur Layla hat, which is a more affordable version of Swanepoel's Cupcake hat.  It's got a playful pom pom on top, and the shape reminds me of the cossack hats that I lived in last winter.

All of the hats, which are incredibly priced at $19.99, are well made with nice details such as printed fabric linings, pretty trims, and tactile textures.  From crisp fedoras and cloches to furry caps, the collection's variety appeals to a wide range of customers. (That fifty-something woman I spoke to planned on wearing her Tabatha hat with her St. John blouse for cold days on the island. By island, I think she meant somewhere in affluent Newport Beach. From our brief conversation, I gathered that she could easily afford an Albertus Swanepoel hat at non-Target prices.) As for me, I'm pleased with my $20 fax fur hat, since it's perfect for cold days when my ears crave warmth and my second-day hair is best kept under wraps.
