This leopard print dress ticks all the boxes of what I want in a dress right now: a dark animal print, a feminine and flowy silhouette, a wallet-friendly price point, and of course, an of-the-moment high-low hemline. High-low hemlines are slowly becoming more prevalent in the retail stores where I shop (although they were all over the London high street about four months ago), and they've subsequently replaced ivory crochet and lace tops as my current fashion obsession. There's something intriguing about a skirt or dress that's short and shows more skin in the front and is longer and more demure in the back. (No wonder they're sometimes called "mullet" dreses; "party" in the front and "business" in the back.)
The red jacket was an impulse buy, but after regretting passing up the Zac Posen for Target red leather jacket last year, this studded version from Forever 21 was a no-brainer. As much as I feel like I'm channeling Michael Jackson while wearing it, it's such a cheerful color and a standout wardrobe item. A couple of years I ago I went stud crazy and bought the identical black version from Forever 21.
The neighborhood where these photos were taken has a tiny beach where nearby residents launch their kayaks and paddle boats. During the course of our brief shoot, several people came onshore quite clumsily with their kayaks. A middle-aged couple (in one kayak) with their twenty-something son (in his own kayak), had a few issues disembarking. The father was stuck in the kayak, and I proceeded to watch as the wife and son got out, brushed themselves off, and began to head to their home across the street, all while the poor father cursed getting sand "in all of his crevices" and complained that he couldn't get out of the kayak due to "improper water drainage." I had half a mind to go help him out since his family didn't seem to care, although walking in the sand in heeled boots is harder than it looks. Eventually he got out, but not without an array of entertaining complaints. Sometimes I love where I live simply because there's never a shortage of people watching opportunities.
